Israel Kamakawiwo'ole
하와이 출신 가수로 
Somewhere over the rainbow + What a wonderful world 의 독특한 메들리로 널리 알려져있다.
이 노래는 영화 'Meet Joe Black'에서 엔딩타이틀로 사용되었었고, 
또한 영화 'Finding Forrester에서도 쓰였다. 
그의 이름은 복잡해서 잘 모를지라도 이 노래만은 들으면 다들 고개를 끄덕거릴 것이라 본다.

이름이 Israel Kamakawiwo'ole... 
외우기도 쉽지 않지만, 그래서인지는 몰라도 IZ라는 짧은 예명으로 불리워지고 있었다.
앨범 자켓에서 보듯이 200kg이 넘는 일본의 스모선수와 같은 체구었다. 
그 때문에 59년생인 그는 97년 서른 여덟이라는 비교적 젊은 나이에 세상을 떠난다. 
젊은 시절 함께 그룹 Makaha Sons Of Ni'ihau에서 활동했던 
그의 형인 Skippy도 82년 스물 여덟이라는 한창인 나이에 심장마비로 세상을 떠났다고 한다.

89년 앨범 'Ka'ano'i'를 발표하면서 솔로 활동과 그룹 활동을 병행하기 시작하는데, 
이 앨범에는 메들리 'Somewhere over the rainbow/What a wonderful world'가 수록되었지만, 
영화에 사용된 버젼은 아니라고 한다. 
영화에서는 본격적인 솔로 활동을 시작한 93년의 앨범 'Facing Future'에 수록된 버젼이 사용되었다. 
그는 이후 두장의 앨범을 더 발표했다. 
앨범 'Facing Future'에는 이 노래 말고도 많은 분들이 아는 노래가 하나 더 수록되어 있다. 
노래의 전주 부분을 듣고서 알아차릴 분이 얼마나 될까?
John Denver의 'Take me home country road'의 리메이크가 수록되어 있다. 
특유의 창법으로 또 다른 편곡으로 우리에게 들려준다.
